Skyheart Sanctuary’s mission is to provide a safe, compassionate haven for animals in need, while honoring the profound truth that those who care for animals often experience healing themselves.

How Skyheart Sanctuary Began

Skyheart Sanctuary was born from compassion, curiosity, and a little bit of serendipity.

Founded by Dr. Rebecca Calisi-Rodriguez, a longtime Davis resident and professor of animal behavior at UC Davis, Skyheart grew from a desire to create something more meaningful—a place where animals in need could find lifelong safety and care, and where people could come together to learn, connect, and heal through that process. While much of Rebecca’s professional life has focused on studying how animals behave and communicate, she felt called to bring that understanding into the real world—to create space for community connection through the simple, powerful act of helping animals.

That dream began to take shape at Pine Trails Ranch, a beloved equestrian property in west Davis owned and lovingly stewarded for over 30 years by Matt and Michelle Haseltine. Their deep commitment to horse rescue and equine education created the perfect setting for something new. When visions aligned, so did the opportunity—to expand the ranch’s reach by creating a sanctuary for other farm animals in need, and by inviting the public to experience the lessons these animals can teach us.

Though Skyheart Sanctuary was founded independently and is not affiliated with or operated by UC Davis, it is deeply informed by a commitment to education, scientific understanding, and compassionate care. We are proud to be part of a broader community that values kindness, learning, and meaningful service.

Today, Skyheart Sanctuary is home to rescued animals who are seen, loved, and given space to simply be. It’s also a place for people—families, students, neighbors, and new friends—to gather, learn, and be reminded of how much we all have to gain when we care for those who need us.
